Start the New Year Organized! Tips to Use in Your Home

The holidays are over, and it’s time to slow down once again and start implementing those new year resolutions. If one of your resolutions is to get organized, then this post is for you! We have some simple organization tips to help you start your year off right and organized.

Start to Declutter the 30-30 Way

You may not know where to start with decluttering, but it’s easier than you think once you get started. For 30 days, make a commitment to declutter each day starting with 1 item for the first day, 2 items for the second, and so on until you are at 30 items for the 30th day. By the end of the challenge, you will have gotten rid of 465 things. It doesn’t have to be large things; you can incorporate piles of paper you’ve been meaning to go through and count each paper as 1 piece. The goal is to help you declutter and form a habit so you will be set for the year.

Start a Cleaning Routine

cleaningCleaning routines can be easier than you think if you break them up into daily, weekly, monthly and annual chores. Think about the ones you do on a regular basis, those most likely can fit into your daily routine, and shouldn’t take more than 5-10 minutes each. This will go a long way to help you stay neat and tidy. For the weekly chores, this can include those needed items such as changing your bed linens or dust to help keep the allergens from lingering too long. The monthly and annual ones should be ones that take a bit more time and can do without regular cleaning. With just a few schedules and minutes to an hour a day, your home will be sparkling in no time! A clean home helps a home feel organized.

Make Zones in Your Home

Breaking your home into zones and focusing on one area at a time, helps to eliminate the overwhelming feelings you may get from not knowing where to start. For instance, you can break your kitchen down into zones starting with your drawers, then your cabinets, and so on. Tackling one or two zones a day will help you to get the job done without feeling like you are getting nowhere. In no time your kitchen will be organized and ready for you to easily find everything that you need. Plus, it will look amazing with every area receiving the attention of some sort.

Ask Yourself Questions

Asking the right questions can help you to know whether it’s an item you still want to keep or are okay to part ways with.  Asking yourself questions such as, “Have I used the item in the past six months?” or “What value does this add to my life?” will help you to really think about the item and how valuable it is to retain. Items that need repair are often held onto with thoughts of repairing them one day. Asking yourself “Will I actually repair this?” will help to put a plan in place if you are committed to keeping the item, and if not, it’s time to let it go.

Plan Out Your Meals

By planning out your meals weekly or monthly, you can save time, money, and room in your pantry for unnecessary items you may forget about. There are lots of websites with delicious recipes that you can cook in advance or take no time to throw together. You’ll have more time to do the things that you love while enjoying a meal that tastes great!
