4 Simple Ways to Prep Your Home for Winter

Before you know it, winter will be here. Is your home ready to handle everything that will come this winter? Whether it be piles of snow or windy days with leaves dancing around, a little cleanup and preparation may be required for all that is thrown your way. In this blog, we will share some simple ways to prepare for winter so you can stay nice and comfortable without any worries.

Gutter Check

When the wind blows, gutters can get backed up with leaves and debris. It’s a good time to make sure gutters are cleaned out so water can run freely through them. When it gets backed up, the water can overflow, running down your home and can deteriorate your exterior at a quicker rate. Water damage is the top reason for clogged gutters. This water can also create a cracked foundation if it pools up and freezes in winter. A clean gutter is also less desirable for birds and other living creatures who may even find a way into your home. By clearing out your gutters you can prevent these issues from arising, saving you one last thing to worry about.

Chimney Sweep

Fireplaces are the perfect spot to relax in front of on a chilly winter day. But it’s also just as important to clean out your fireplace to keep it working properly. When we burn wood, creosote is released, which builds up in your flue and can cause a fire if not removed. If you have a gas fireplace, you also want to check your propane level to ensure you have enough gas for the season. Fireplaces are a great way to reduce heating costs, but if there are any obstructions, you may not get the full heat you are looking for. Critters are always looking for warm places to stay, and a fireplace is a perfect spot. Getting it inspected each year with a chimney sweep can find any bricks that may need to be replaced, creosote and critters removed, and extend the life of your flue so you can enjoy a warm fire year after year.

Reverse Ceiling Fans

Another way you can save on your heating costs during winter is to switch your ceiling fan rotation direction. It can actually help you to feel warmer in the winter. Most of the blades of a ceiling fan are angled slightly, allowing the airflow to move down. Since heat rises, if you have your fan on during the winter, it will push the warm air down, letting you stay nice and comfortable. If your ceilings are vaulted or tall, this will be especially helpful to draw the warm air down. You won’t have to turn your thermostat up as much, saving you money throughout the season!

Protect Pipes from Freezing

Having a plan in place to prevent your pipes from freezing should also be something you should prepare for. When the weather starts to get cold, make sure your outdoor faucets are drained and use faucet covers throughout the winter months. You should also turn your interior faucets on occasionally when the temperature begins to drop to keep the water moving through the pipes to prevent frozen pipes. Let your neighbors know you are going away and ask them to check periodically to ensure the measures you have taken are working to prevent any frozen pipes.
